call for artists

wanted to share with you my son Dylan's year long thesis project. i may have mentioned around here that he is a graphic design major graduating this year. it's a project that hopes to put art lovers in touch with artists by giving a taste of the artist's work, with the hope that relationships and sales will grow beyond that first taste. you can be a part of it by clicking here!

What is Amuse-Bouche: The Art Appetizer?

Amuse-Bouche (uh-mooz-boosh) is French for ‘entertains the mouth.’ In the culinary world it is usually a small, original, bite-sized appetizer which is created personally by the chef and cannot be found on a menu. It is an expression of the chef’s skill and style and can predict the culinary approach to the rest of the meal. We use the phrase Amuse-Bouche here in a similar sense. A small, original sample of art, created and inspired by the artist to help build the artistic appetite. Collect the art boxes and try out new artists and styles all without making the financial commitment of a large work. Amuse-Bouche brings a taste of different artists directly to you. Bon Appetit!

christmas wishes

i'm having so much fun making this home made wrapping paper!

here's some supplies. the paper we're using is a huge roll of contractor's paper found in the painting section at lowe's. there were 2 thicknesses and we got the thickest. better for painting on, a little harder to wrap with.

wishing you the merriest, happiest christmas, warmed with light, laughter and loved ones.

xo

birthday weekend

it was middle son's 22nd birthday this past weekend! i just love that kid.

his favorite birthday pie recipe

i love him so much i made him help me finish painting the dining room.

i'm such a terrible mom. i didn't even take down the origami stars hanging from the ceiling, our very own 100 million suns inspired by this snow patrol album cover. or the disco ball. every dining room needs a disco ball. especially when you're celebrating a birthday!

besides, i think it helps disguise the light. or does it do the exact opposite? i might not mind the light so much in this new and improved, all white room.

hmm...

and here is ginger the wonder dog, getting her most favorite thing in the world - a butt scratch.

ah, it's the simple things in life.

crochet patterns for you and me

pink, charcoal, oatmeal

my mom taught me to crochet when i was little just as she had learned from her mom. my grandmother created very fine work using tiny steel hooks. she made doilies and had the infinite patience to complete tablecloths and bedspreads with intricate, floral granny squares all with those tiny hooks.

my mom made me granny square vests and ponchos in bright thick yarns using big hooks in metallic colors. she also made a bedspread for me and surprised me with it when i came home from a week long 6th grade class trip. it was a soft turquoise yarn complete with popcorn stitches.

i've tried my hand at using both types of hooks, both dainty and substantial. i've made granny square quilts for my kids, none as beautiful as my mom or grandmother's but they were warm and well loved.

i haven't crocheted in years and that's what seems to happen. i pick it up and put it down again. so now i have the urge again and somehow i just know that when i do pick up the hook, that my fingers will know what to do. it feels like the memory is in the whorls, loops and arches of my fingertips, passed down from my mother and grandmother's hands. do your fingers have memories too?
hmm... but will i remember how to read a pattern?

so, now to go dig out the yarn and hook to make a cowl for the coming winter.

and just to keep it democratic and equal opportunity and stuff... here's a knit cowl

susk and banoo

is it the pipe, the lightly mussed hair, the hint of a beard?  oh, yeah right, it's the cowl, yes the cowl, the beautiful cowl.

road trip

the boys and i took a road trip to savannah to check out scad, otherwise known as the savannah college of art and design.  looks like an amazing school in an equally amazing city. lush, gorgeous, hot, romantic, arty, friendly are some words that come to mind to describe savannah.  the historic district, where we stayed and where scad is mainly located, is appropriately named.  the houses and brick streets are from another time. the squares with beautiful old trees and spanish moss with center statues and monuments tell stories of old savannah.  horse drawn carriages mix with pedicabs.  i loved it even in august.  can't wait to go back.

enough with the talk, here's some pictures.

gratitude

you know, i had this long, witty post planned where i talked about why i haven't been around much (nasty colds all around, somewhat unexpected but much anticipated burst of business) and then i talked about our christmas (family, love, food, presents) and described all the delicious food we had for christmas dinner (cola glazed ham, risotto, pears poached in amaretto disaronno and ice cream) but short and sweet feels better tonight.

i hope you had a wonderful christmas filled with the love of your family and friends, laughter and good food.  i feel so grateful to have had exactly that.

here's our first real snow. beautiful.

and i'm so grateful to these websites for featuring my humble calendar which i'm sure is part of the reason i've been so busy.

embracing gray

it didn't actually rain all weekend but we did have some amazing gray cloudy skies.  i do love the color gray and so i'm choosing to embrace the gray skies as well as the blue.  is there some deeper meaning here?  hmm...

any monday morning surprises for you?  aren't they the best?
