summer parties

i've been thinking a lot about parties since we just celebrated my youngest graduating from high school (gulp) and my baby brother's birthday.

the morning after

here's some party ideas i'm loving from decorating and serving to invitations and a drink recipe.  enjoy!

my quirky valentine

i think i must have a strange sense of humor.  i don't know.  i like valentine's day but i like it with an edge.  or maybe it just brings out my sarcastic side.  anyway, i hope these make you laugh out loud or at least crack a smile.

what are you doing for valentine's day?  i do love a good romantic story.
however you'll be celebrating, i hope it's a good one!

oh yes, and if you're into zombies, (even if you're not) go see warm bodies. it's a perfect valentine's day movie!

sketchbook workshop

i've been doing a sketchbook workshop over at run 2 the wild.  it's the perfect sort of exercise to stretch your sketching muscles.  it's a gentle workout with suggested time limits so you don't feel like you're aiming for perfection, which i liked.

sketch 1 is the self portrait that describes who you are on the inside, not who we see on the outside.  i didn't think about it at all, just started moving the pencil.  is it a self portrait?  i don't know, but it was spontaneous.

sketch 2 is the eyes closed scribble that is then made into something recognizable.

these exercises help to loosen me up for what comes next.  felt like tai chi for my creative side.

here's some thank you cards i've been working on to put in with orders.  i'm really liking the simplicity of them and may add some to the shop. :)

and here's a few things i've been coveting.

love this keychain
silvered glass bracelet

temporary tattoos

it is so past my bedtime.  tomorrow i'll still be working on organizing. my life, that is.

good night kids :)

a new word

what is the opposite word for procrastination?  that is my word for this year.

i've never been one for resolutions.  i think it has something to do with wanting to be spontaneous but maybe it has more to do with commitment.

but lately, i see, or can imagine, the benefit of having goals and writing them down.  (check this out for some statistics on goal setting)

i knew that january would be a busy month - finding colleges for both sons and then applications and financial aid forms are the biggies. i just found out that one of the schools has an additional financial aid form - the dreaded css form.  the one where they want to know everything including what kind of toilet paper you use and how many pennies are stuck between the couch cushions. and if you could see the state of my paperwork you'd understand why i'm quaking in my boots.  the result of, you guessed it, procrastination.

some synonyms for procrastination from the thesaurus:

delay
hinder
impede
prolong
stall
dilly-dally
let slide
lazy

i'm not liking the sound of these words.

so, along with remembering to breathe, i am going to banish procrastination from my kingdom.

now i just have to figure out how to do that. :)

anyone have any ideas?  does it start with being organized?
that might have to be another word for this year.
oh but where to start?

in theory, here's some lovely things that would surely help me get organized.

                              coat rack
                              vintage locker baskets
                              vintage frame blackboard
                              1950s trash can
                              fridge magnet
                              vintage map clothespins

so this weekend i will finish up those dreaded financial aid forms, get some orders ready for my shop, help my son paint his room, make sure everything is in for college applications and breathe.

what are you doing this weekend?  something fun?

embracing gray

it didn't actually rain all weekend but we did have some amazing gray cloudy skies.  i do love the color gray and so i'm choosing to embrace the gray skies as well as the blue.  is there some deeper meaning here?  hmm...

in honor of gray, i offer the following for your viewing pleasure

our monday morning surprise: looks like we might have a dose of pink eye in our midst.  some chicken soup might be in order and possibly a trip to the doctor. i'll be heading to the drug store for hand sanitizer and keeping my distance. but in a loving way.

any monday morning surprises for you?  aren't they the best?

it's going to be a long night

it has been a long night...  searching for colleges for my youngest son, college loans for middle son.  but a quart jar full of chai tea makes it all a bit better.

it occurs to me that i might not think so at 3:00 in the morning when i have to get up to, you know, pee.  oh well, too late now.

a night out

if you like weird, quirky, beautiful movies then go see moonrise kingdom.  we are already planning when we can go see it again.

my guys teased me that it was such an etsy movie and they're right.  it is beautiful to look at and i think that the set designers could have shopped on etsy for all the props.  here's my list of things that could have been in the movie, all found on etsy.
